Founded in 1966, it is the only specialized scientific unit for moral studies in the country. Its research area includes moral changes in Bulgarian society in recent years, moral psychology, political ethics, business ethics, bioethics, medical ethics and deontology, environmental ethics, computer ethics, the moral and the global problems of today, the role of values in the formation of identity, professional and applied ethics, moral issues of personal socialization.

In 2004 the department organized the first national conference in ethics Bulgarian Ethics-Past, Present and Future. Last year’s second national conference in ethics approached The moral in Bulgarian politics. Finally, the conference of this year gathered specialists from different domains under the theme Morality and Socialization of Bulgarian Children and Youth.
